Qi reactions: Healing with Qigong Practice with Lot Wijlhuizen

Zhineng Qigong teacher, Lot Wijlhuizen, intensified her Qigong practice and was met with a profound experience. Qi reactions, occurred after her daily practice. Qi reactions in Zhineng Qigong are often misunderstood, but they are actually a positive sign of progress in one’s health journey. The Qi field responds to clear intentions & improves Qi flow throughout the body working to remove blockages.

Managing Qigong side effects, became a crucial part of her healing journey. Symptoms like nausea and headaches, along with an emotional release presented itself. Old frames of reference were addressed and deep-rooted emotional blockages, were let go of during this time. Qi blockages were finally removed.

Qigong reactions requires a strong mindset and acceptance. As Dr. Pang Ming, emphasised the importance of consistent training and staying the course. Surrendering to Qi leads to greater freedom and this Lot knew. Qigong for emotional healing is particularly powerful, as demonstrated by the Ling Ling exercise, which focuses on the emotional level.

True self-awareness in Qigong is a key concept. Helping students detach from thoughts, diseases, or old habits to anchor on pastures new. Lot suggests three anchors: being your own cheerleader, main character and embodying the “frog” metaphor. One of Dr Pang’s many parables…

Experience her journey through her own words.

When a Qi reaction hit her heart, Lot Wijlhuizen turned it into one of the most important periods of her life, an opportunity to clean up, remove old things from her system, and transform her past. Let us learn about Qi reactions, why they occur, and the blessing they are. My name is Torsten Lueddecke, and this is the Wisdom Qigong podcast. For me, Qi reactions, it’s always like a positive

process It is when you train, or when you start training Qigong in the beginning, or maybe when you start training more, that it can happen there’s so much new Qi, or new information, as we call it, in the body that it starts to restructure itself as part of the healing process. And because of that, you might feel, like, a bit dizzy or nauseous, or sometimes experience a lot

of thoughts coming up or resistance, like more mental reactions. And you can also have some emotional reactions, and people suddenly have to cry and don’t know why. It’s just actually the Qi working and you also working things out. It’s also the blockages resolving, so the Qi starts flowing better, blockages resolve, and then suddenly, yeah, things start shifting in the body, and you can feel that. So is this

basically because there is suddenly a lot of movement and change in the body, and that expresses itself through this Qi reaction, as you just described? Is that the right way to put it? Yes, yes. You can also put it like that. Absolutely, yeah. And, yeah, I know from homeopathic medicine, they have something similar sometimes, you know, when you take homeopathic medicine, they say it gets a little worse

before it actually gets better. Is that the same thing, or is it something else? I would say it’s a little bit something else, because with homeopathic, it’s something you want to get rid of, maybe, huh? It gets a little bit worse first, then resolves. When Qi starts working in the body, it’s a little bit less defined because nothing has to get worse. It’s just that you feel different.

So I have a lot of people, when I teach, who come for the first time, and very often, after an hour, they already feel a lot happier and a lot more relaxed. So that is positive Qi working for them. And then they say, “Oh, sometimes I was so warm, or I got so cold,” or “I felt a lot of resistance, like halfway.” So those are actually so many

different things that can happen when the Qi starts working. So it’s not just one thing getting worse; it’s actually everything getting better, but you just don’t know on what level the Qi helps you first, whether that’s mentally, emotionally, or physically. Okay, I understand. And how come Qi reactions are such an important topic for you? Because when we started talking about, you know, what we should discuss today, Qi

reactions came up. Is it a personal experience, or is it because of the people you work with? Or do you think it’s just specifically important to know about Qi reactions? Well, I think both. I teach daily, so I see a lot of people when they first start getting small Qi reactions, and I’ve learned how to help them with that. But because I’ve already been doing this for years,

I also follow people sometimes for quite a long time. When they start training a bit more, or sometimes have a few days with me, like when I go to the Canary Islands and we train for six days, things really start shifting, including personal growth. And then you can see that the reactions are a bit different than when you’re just starting, because then it’s like little things, and when

you’ve been training longer, it’s more. And you can also see that in the theory books of Dr. Pang Ming, you can get huge Qi reactions. And then it’s like serious stuff, because then you might get headaches for days, or even weeks, or you might get so nauseous, or have diarrhea and stuff. So, there, you can see that if people train harder, they could grow so quickly, personally, in

true self-awareness, with so much growth in there, that they also get a bit more reactions. And so I help people with that when they train with me. But of course, I had to experience them first myself. And that was immensely helpful because, last year, I had, for three weeks, really, really huge Qi reactions. It was a very, very interesting process for me. That deepened the trust in how

good they are and how happy, how blessed you are if you get them So basically, a Qi reaction is a good sign because it means something is working. Like as if the Qi field understood what needs to be done and then starts to reorganize the Qi accordingly. Right? Do you want to tell us a little bit about your personal experience there? Or… Yes, of course, of course. But,

but you’re right, very, very right, because it’s true. If your intention is very clear and you keep on working with your intention, then the Qi will help you. You just don’t know in, in what matter it will happen to you. But the Qi will start to work in any way for you. So, so what happened to me is that I was. I was training quite a lot already,

but then I was intensifying my training a little bit from like really two to three hours a day. And then there was, I don’t know anymore what it was, but it was a mental thing, and I thought, okay, now this is time for me to really say goodbye to this frame of reference or this habit. I apparently have things coming back in my life more often, and I

was still working with this, and then I thought, okay, now I’m going to get really through this. So a day later, I was training with a friend and we did two hours of Lingling, which is opening up the Hunyuan Palace. Normally, you do that for about five or ten minutes, but we did two hours. This practice is mainly focused on the emotional level, which is mostly level three

of Qi. The next day, I woke up and I was completely ill. So I was affected in every possible way: diarrhea, fever, completely nauseous, and a splitting headache as well. I woke up and thought, I think this is it, you know, this is the moment. Within the hour, I was also emotional. I was actually crying the whole time, no, not the whole time, but everything made me cry.

I thought, this is strong stuff, you know, because I had never had that before. And I was just crying intensely, like ten times a day, so I could feel that this was older, deeper stuff coming out. This wasn’t because, you know, my TV broke down or something. So then I thought, okay, well, it’s about keeping your mindset as strong as you can because you don’t want to just

go into it and be ill. I really wanted to work with this. So I intensified my training to a few more hours a day and practiced, first of all, to create more distance between my true self awareness and all the circumstances, the headache, the physical and emotional things, so I could separate myself more and more from my true self, my frame of reference, and the thoughts coming up.

I also worked on how I treated myself when I was ill. Over time, I was able to work with that, help myself, and heal on a very, very deep level So I really took the time to allow the Qi to work for me, as it took three weeks, and I just surrendered to it. The first few days, I was full of resistance, which is also a normal reaction

for many people, but also for me at that time, like, I don’t want this. Then I thought, oh no, the first step is acceptance. The first step is surrender and just keep going, and work with this. And then I could really be more and more joyful, just doing this process, and grateful for the process. That also helped to just continue training and, you know, let it all happen

and let it all get out. It took a week for the headaches to disappear, and the fevers and diarrhea took a lot longer. So, it was really intense. It was exactly how they write it in the book and later turned out to be one of the most important—well, maybe not the most important, but a quite important period in my life. I was able to clean up so many

things out of my system, especially things from the past that I would normally not be so happy to look at. But now, I looked at them, and I could really transform, really, like, oh, I can. I can only see it like that as well. So this distance helped me so much to really transform old stuff, and on the other hand, to learn how to ignore a lot of

other things, like headaches, like sobbing all the time, like being completely emotional, and still having, you know, more and more, a very deep trust in the whole process. So, it was. And then it’s not overwhelming anymore And then, I can now always go back to that period if I need strength or if I need change, because then I know we’re so much stronger than we actually realize. My

name is Leila Cupido, and I’m the project manager of the Students Hub. Our team is constantly adding events, teachers, videos, and other resources to take your practice to the next level, improving the quality of your life and the lives of the people around you. We do this work for you, so please use it. Can I ask a few questions about that experience? Because it’s clearly a very powerful

experience that you’ve gone through. Now, when you said, you know, you woke up the next day and you had all these symptoms, a headache, diarrhea, and all of that, and you started to become emotional and you were crying Well, did you? Did you know what the reason for the crying was? I mean, did you actually know what this is all about? Or was it more of an overwhelming

general feeling that overcame you? Did you know the cause, like, okay, this and this happened in the past and that’s why I’m crying now? Or was it more like, you know… Okay, no, no, I was just emotional. There was. I was just all over the place emotionally. So there were emotional reactions to a lot, especially to some movie I was watching. And then, it was actually the emotions

themselves. I think it was grief coming out, not being related to anything. But then, in meditations, I went to the root of that because I chose to go there and get the root out. But it wasn’t. No, it’s never presented very clearly, if you don’t really take the time to sit down and meditate on it, would you say? Would you say? Because a lot of people now are

scared to go too deep and back, because some of the events that happen in our lives are so traumatic that we don’t really want to go back there. So, would you say it was necessary for you to do this exploration, or would you say that just the pure fact that grief could come out of you and you could clear it would have been enough? To get to the

next level and achieve extra healing there? Oh, that’s a good one. I think maybe 90% is just doing that. So, also, if you listen to special workshops about trauma and qigong, Masali is very good at it, and he had a special workshop about that. He actually says it’s enough just to open, really open, open, and be loving to yourself all the time. So, you just love, love, love,

love yourself, as he says it all the time, and you open, and then that is enough to release trauma. For me, it was helpful to go actually to the root of something that defined my whole life and to work with that. I think my whole life changed. Well, not all of it, but a very important part changed afterward, and everything else followed. Well, a lot of things got

a lot better afterward. Yeah, congratulations, Lot. I think you’ve done amazing work here. I just wanted to clarify this because, you know, not everybody is at that stage to be willing or able to do that work. So, if the Qi reaction hits you and you’re going through all of this, you don’t necessarily have to make a conscious effort to understand it, because the Qi is doing its work,

regardless of whether we are trying to understand the exact causes of it. But I get what you’re saying. You’ve obviously cleared something in your life that was very important, but you were at a stage where you were ready to address it. It seems to me… Absolutely, yeah. Yeah, I tried before. It didn’t work then. So, good. Yeah, yeah, but you’re right. I think it’s enough to just open

up and do the energetic work. You don’t have to dig deep if you don’t want to. Or, yeah, I think it’s wonderful to dig deep because then you can probably get even further. But, yeah, I’m just… because, as I said, not everybody is there. So I want to open a path for everyone, no matter where they’re at in their life. Now, the second question I have is, you’re

obviously very experienced when it comes to Qigong, Zhineng Qigong, and also you knew a lot about Qi reactions before. It seems that, you know, the mere fact that there was so much emotion coming up as well, that’s like an indication for people, okay, well, this is not just a normal diarrhea or a normal headache. There is more to it. It’s probably a Qi reaction. But we also know

that often, you know, if it’s just… it doesn’t happen to the same extent. Most people don’t have a three-week Qi reaction. They’ve got a little headache here or there. How can they, how can they, how can they differentiate between, oh my God, maybe it’s food poisoning or maybe it’s a Qi reaction? Is there any way, you know, that you could advise us? You know, how do we understand

whether it is actually a Qi reaction or something else? Well, we do. We have like five hours to talk about this because I would say, well, we just discussed it, actually. You could, you could call everything a Qi reaction. Of course. So if you, if you go to. Like me, last week I went to have a croquette, a Dutch croquette. Croquette. What’s croquette like in Spanish? And that

one was apparently very old. So I had all night quite severe Qi reactions from the croquette, which was too old. So then you could say, okay, well, apparently you, you did have a Qi reaction because you trained hard. But then you could say, okay, but maybe. Why, why, why was this happening? At that moment, I had that, you know, that food. So maybe, maybe you could say, okay,

that’s also a Qi reaction. And I deal with that in the same way. I think it’s, I think it’s a great way of looking at it. I never thought about it this way because basically, you’re right, the body does the same thing. Say you’re eating something that’s not good for you, and the body wants to get rid of it. It’s actually the Qi doing the work, you know,

to get the poison out of your body. And one could argue, with basically any illness, if I catch a cold, it’s also the body trying to get, you know, the virus out or something like that. So that’s a very good point. You know, in one way or another, one could say, and yeah, maybe there are some Zhineng Qigong teachers now wondering what this man is talking about. But

yeah, in a way, one could say anything is actually a Qi reaction because it’s the body and the Qi field doing what it needs to do in order to get you back to a healthy state. Right? Or am I talking? Absolutely. And maybe also the Qi field helping you to allow what has to happen. So it really is about loving the process, loving your life in any moment,

under any circumstances, regardless of what happens. Because you know you’re going to dominate. I always say, you know, you are so much stronger than everything that’s happening around you. So, in a way, you could ignore everything that happens and just stay happy And another way you could say, oh, I try to work with it, you know, I’m trying to really transform things. So, there are actually two choices:

whether it’s a Qi reaction officially or not. Right, right. And then there’s another thing you mentioned that kind of caught my attention, which I not clearly understood. You say you distanced yourself. You distanced your conscious awareness or your consciousness from what actually happened. Can you just explore that a little bit? Yeah, that is, that is actually what we, what we try to learn every day with the Zhineng

mindset, is that there is like, you are not your disease, you are not your thoughts, you are not your pain. You can actually develop the true self-awareness, like the consciousness, and then have more distance to thoughts coming by, actually, or thoughts that come by a lot, which is then maybe your frame of reference speaking again, or habits or certain patterns, but you can distance that a little bit

from yourself and just have more awareness of it. So then their choice arises, actually, to make a new choice and not be on automatic pilot, but work with all of that from a distance. Then your personal strength grows and grows, and you get more and more choice and more and more freedom in that. Wonderful. Got it. I got it. Okay. Okay. So what would you advise, you know,

the listeners who practice Zhineng Qigong and get a Qi reaction? Now, what is your advice to these people? Yeah, I always congratulate them and tell them I’m so proud and so happy for you because apparently you’re really training well, as the body gives you this very, very good reaction. So, please never stop, please go on, and never choose fear, no matter what the reaction or illness is. Just

go on, trust yourself, and trust the process. And I would even say, intensify the training, you know, just for fun to see what happens. And when it’s overwhelming and too much, okay, you can train a bit less and work with that. You know, most of the time it’s not that bad. It’s small reactions, and everybody can cope with that and just, you know, take time for yourself. Really,

really go inside. Really, you know, take time to maybe rest or have a tea, talk to yourself, or smile at yourself a bit more, and just go on. I mean, it’s completely safe reactions; it’s just a good thing. I make positive anchors for people and also for myself in the process. So I had actually developed three anchors for people to work with. And for me, one was being

the cheerleader. So, I was cheering myself up the whole time, you know, oh, Lot, you’re doing so good. Oh, okay, now, now you’re crying again, or you’re back on the toilet. But that’s so great! I’m so happy for you. You’re doing so well. So, there was the cheerleader cheering me up all the time, saying, oh, you’re doing fine. That really helped with self-love too. Right. And the second

was a movie character who was very inspiring to me. So, you can pick your own anchors that really lift you up and help you through what could also be considered a difficult time. The third one was the frog Master Liu told us about. He compares our true self-awareness to a frog. I don’t know why he chose the frog, but he actually told us a story about this frog

who is just sitting somewhere, and then a little ant comes by and bites the frog on the foot. So, if you’re having a normal day and you think, “Hey, this frog bites me on the foot, are you crazy? What were you thinking?” you can develop a lot of thoughts and emotions about that frog, that ant biting you on the foot. That is actually also a habitual perspective, sometimes,

to blame circumstances, things that happen which you cannot influence, and react to them. But if you’re the true self-awareness, so if you’re the frog, you think, “Hey, there’s this little ant nibbling my foot,” and you can react in a way that you think, “Oh, well, I’ll ignore this,” or “Oh, this is a lovely little ant coming by,” or you think, “Maybe I can eat this little ant and

turn it into something positive. I can transform this into food.” Thank you very much. So both ways work. For me, since that period, I always, if something happens, I say to myself, “I am the frog.” And then that helps me get more distance from things happening and deal with them in a better way, which in turn gives me the choices that you were mentioning earlier. You don’t need

to react automatically to any incident that happens. You’ve got choices and can choose your reaction and the impact it has on you and your life. Right? Yeah, absolutely. Yes, absolutely. There’s always a choice, but you have to learn how to work with it. I love how you use the choice concept for your little cheerleader. Is it actually a cheerleader, or a character that you have? It’s both. Yeah.

And cheering you up, cheering you up, and you get a Qi reaction, saying, “You’re doing so great.” I mean, that’s a very different perspective from “poor me, I’ve got a headache.” Right? And a very different experience also. Absolutely. Yeah. So it helped me never be the victim. Never. And sometimes you want to be, and you think there’s no solution from that perspective. So then, transform and see things

really differently. I know this goes a bit far for people who are just starting because, as I see it, it also develops over the years you train. The Qi helps you with the mindset, and the mindset also helps you with the Qi. So, if new people come, I don’t help them with that yet. I just try to be there for them and do the best thing for them.

I ask them, “What helped you through that period?” and they always say, “Well, I needed somebody to tell it to, someone who understands.” And secondly, it’s good to empathize. That is a good thing, and I should go on and explain a bit more. So, knowledge, just knowledge about what’s happening, is normally enough, you know. It’s important not to judge them, also not judging what kind of Qi reactions

they have. When somebody comes and is nauseous, it’s easy to say, “Oh, you’re a bit nauseous. That’s fine. Take a chair and go on,” or. Or have water. But sometimes people are full of resistance, so you teach them that it’s a really good Qi field and everything is fine. And then they are suddenly full of resistance. And then I thought, oh, this is also just the Qi reactions.

But sometimes, you can feel their resistance, of course, in the Qi field, and you think, you know, it’s a little less pleasant than when somebody gets a bit nauseous. But actually, that’s the same. So don’t judge any Qi reactions. It’s all fine. It’s all progress. It’s just something else out of the system coming your way, and it’s there. So you can just leave it there and help them,

you know, feel compassion for their process, no matter how that looks like or what that looks like. And I think that’s a last important aspect you were raising here, the no judgment when I have a Qi reaction. Yeah, not to go in, oh, my God, I’m having this and that, blah, blah, blah. It is what it is because that’s just the path the body needs to take and

the Qi needs to take in order to achieve the healing that I want to achieve with my practice. Right. And so the no judgment, I think it’s, I’m glad it came up, you know, now, towards the end of our little conversation here, because it is important and, in particular, to beginners now, they. They come to the training, say, well, I came here to get better and now I’m

nauseous, so what’s going on? Yeah, yeah, that’s true. That’s true. Yeah, but you can. Yeah, well, take some time to explain, you know, take them seriously and help them, because for them, it’s all new and they don’t know what’s going on. So really take time for them to really explain and help them, really support them, and, yeah, also set an intention for them and help them to set

their own intention. Because, you know, the more you start working with setting good intentions, the better everything will go. So, right. Also, when you’re coaching somebody with Qi reactions. So thank you very much, Lot. I mean, we focused on the topic of Qi reactions here today, but obviously, you are. We could see you’re a very skilled teacher when it comes to, you know, dealing with these issues when

they arise. But you’re just, you know, normal. You’re giving normal trainings, you’re doing level one, level two, level three as well, or what are you offering to your students? Yeah, all that. One, two, and three, Nature Qigong, eight brocades. I make a little bit of a mix, tai chi ball, things like that. So I make a mix and I follow actually the Qi field. So I roughly know

what’s coming. But I also adapt to what I pick up and what people really need, especially when I have a retreat in the Canary Islands. Then it’s also about, you know, really, really, in those six days, there’s big transformation happening in all levels. So I help them with that because I’m also a coach. So that is helpful also during those retreats. But they’re mostly about love and joy.

So it’s mostly about being so joyful, being so happy. Well, that is what Qigong is about anyway. But, you know, in the sun, it’s always a little bit easier for everybody to… Actually, the Canary Islands sound very, very tempting. So I have to ask you, do you offer these retreats in English, or is it Dutch? It’s both. Okay, perfect. Yeah. So it’s open to international students, and you

can work with them either way. Absolutely. I also speak some French, Spanish, and German, so that’s all fine. I can mix it a bit. Yeah, so that’s great. And I forgot to mention, I’m also a Hunyuan Qi therapist, so I work a lot with people one-on-one, giving them treatments, helping them with their personal healing plans, and with their exercises and private lessons in Amsterdam. Yeah. But of course,

online, you can do everything these days. Absolutely. And obviously, I’m a big fan of Hunyuan Qi therapy, as you might expect. Yeah. So, yeah. Thank you very much. Thank you very much, Lot, for this inspiring conversation. And yeah, thank you to all our listeners, and thank you for your questions. I look forward to having you on the show again, not too far away, maybe for another topic that

we can explore. Cool. Yeah, sure. Nice. We trust you enjoyed this conversation, and we invite you to subscribe to our podcast so we can stay in touch and notify you of future episodes. We will end today’s episode with the Eight Verses Meditation, performed by Zhineng Qigong teacher Katrin Hendricks. Enjoy!
